The situation for LGBT people in Arab countries

June 26, 20177:00 p.m.
MADRID
Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62). 7:00 p.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

Casa Árabe has organized this dialogue between Hafedh Trifi, a member of the executive committee at the Tunisian Association for Justice and Equality (Damj), and Álvaro Zamarreño, a journalist at Cadena SER.

Factors related with gender and identity produce major debate in Arab societies, where prejudice and ignorance predominate. Demanding human rights is a pending task for many people, and in particular for minorities like LGBT people as a group. What are the challenges currently faced, not only in terms of the law, but also the burdens of family, religion and society? What role is played by activism in making this cause more visible?

From June 23 to July 2, Madrid is becoming the world capital of the fight for sexual freedom and diversity, as it will be hosting “World Pride 2017.” With this event, Casa Árabe is joining the initiative by the Autonomous Region of Madrid to break down barriers and create a space for meeting and discussion, but also for awareness and acknowledgment.

Hafedh Trifi is a member of the executive committee of Damj, the Tunisian Association for Justice and Equality, which works to promote the human rights of LGBTIQ people in Tunisia. He has taken part in round table discussions on homosexuality and religion, and on the unconstitutionality of Article 230 of Tunisia’s penal code. He is also a member of the LGBTQI coalition in Tunisia, of the individual liberties group, and he was the director of the Office of the Higher Independent Instance Vote in the election of 2014. He has taken part in the drafting of several reports about the status of human rights among LGBTIQ individuals.
