The Syrian Experience of Migration to Spain

November 29, 201710:30 a.m.
MADRID
Casa Árabe Ambassadors’ Hall (at Calle Alcalá, 62). First floor. 10:30 a.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

The REACH Initiative and Casa Árabe are presenting the results of the latest study completed by the REACH Initiative in Spain, in a partnership with the Mixed Migration Platform (MMP), on the experience of migration amongst Syrians who reached Spain from 2015 to 2017 (routes, risks involving protection and future intentions).

Throughout all of 2017, an increase in irregular arrivals has occurred on Spanish coasts. In the month of September, the number of irregular entries reached 17,430, three times more than over the same time period in 2016. Among these, most of the refugees and migrants coming in from the Middle East were of Syrian origin.

The new study “On the Way to Spain: Syrian Migration to Europe via the Western Mediterranean route between 2015 and 2017,” carried out by REACH in partnership with the Mixed Migration Platform (MMP), attempts to achieve a better understanding of the routes traveled by the Syrians who came to Spain from 2015 to 2017, as well as the reasons which led them to choose those routes and Spain as a destination. Moreover, the study analyzes the protection risks found by Syrians in Algeria and Morocco, and their future intentions after arrival in Spain.

Taking part in the presentation are representatives of the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security, international organizations, refugee intake centers and non-governmental organizations.
