Last July 8, the logistical base was opened for the World Food Program at the Port of Palmas de Gran Canaria, the American Ertharin Cousin, and the Spanish Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García Margallo; Industry and Tourism, José Manuel Soria; Public Works, Ana Pastor, and the Secretary General of International Development Cooperation, Gonzalo Robles; the President of the Canary Islands Government, Paulino Rivero; the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Juan José Cardona; the President of the Island Council of Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, and the General Director of Casa África, Luis Padrón, in addition to others.

By starting up this center of the PMA, the team of which has worked provisionally over the last two years at Casa África and the United Nations, has added Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to the sites in Brindisi (Italy), Accra (Ghana), Panama City, Dubai and Malaysia. These strategic centers make it possible to perform large shipments of food and humanitarian materials with great agility and effectiveness wherever it is needed, in less than 48 hours.
