Spain has received news of the murder of 30 Ethiopian citizens in Libya by terrorists with great indignation.

As in previous instances, the terrorists have stated that they are members of Daesh and that their motivation is to instigate religious hatred, affirming that they killed the victims due merely to the fact that they were Christians.

The Government expresses its utmost disgust over the cruel murders of these innocent people and its profound sadness, which it would like to extend to the victims’ family and friends, and to the people and authorities of Ethiopia.

Spain is fully committed to the fight against terrorism and would like to call out to the international community to join forces to fight this barbarianism, above all when it seeks to harm such essential rights as those of religious freedom and freedom of beliefs.

The activity by Daesh and other terrorist groups in Libya has been made easier due to the persistence of a profound political crisis and the lack of a single unified government that can exercise its authority over the country’s entire territory. Likewise, this situation makes it more difficult to repress the activities by criminal human trafficking networks. This leads to tragedies like the one which recently occurred in waters near Libya.

Terrorism must not be allowed to undermine Libya’s transition towards democracy and stability. Once again, Spain calls for all of the parties in Libya to set aside their differences and join forces against the threat of terrorism and the barbaric acts which it entails. In this sense, Spain reiterates its support for the mediation work by the special representative of the UNGS, Bernardino León, to achieve a solution to the current political and security-related crisis, on the basis of a Libyan national unity government.
