CIHAR is promoting an initiative for the official recognition of Arab Madrid

December 15, 2016
MADRID
The Intercultural Spanish-Arab Circle (CIHAR) is promoting an initiative for the Municipal Government of Madrid’s official recognition of Arab Madrid (Maŷrit), based on a suggestion by one of its honorary members, Mr. Pedro Martínez Montávez. To achieve this, a campaign of support has been promoted through the website Change.org.

The Intercultural Spanish-Arab Circle (CIHAR) has publicized the initiative through the media. It was made known under the headline “The Forgotten Mark Left Behind by Arab Madrid.”

On November 21, 2016, a commission was created with experts on the matter to draft a document to sign on to the initiative, which was then sent to institutions and individuals working in sociocultural fields.

The Arabists Mr. Pedro Martínez Montávez, Ms. Carmen Ruiz Bravo-Villasante and Mr. Daniel Gil-Benumeya Flores, along with the archeologist Mr. José Ignacio Murillo Fragero, a scholar on Madrid’s Arab legacy, Mr. Rafael Martínez Sánchez-Girón, and the chairman, Mr. Abdo Tounsi as its coordinator, make up the commission.

The Intercultural Spanish-Arab Circle is encouraging institutions, associations, foundations and civil society to take part in the initiative so that Madrid’s Arab and Islamic origins from the times of Al-Andalus can be acknowledged as an important part of its history.
