The jury for the Co-existence Award of 2015, which met in the Throne Room of the Palacio de la Asamblea, decided on Thursday, January 29, that Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who used education to challenge the Taliban in her country and won the Nobel Peace Prize of 2014, will be the recipient of this award in recognition of her figure and everything she represents.

Malala was granted this award for “her courage and her exemplary conduct, which have made her a living symbol of the rights to education and equality.” These are “essential values of co-existence,” and she has done so “in accordance with a philosophy of non-violence,” as pointed out by Begoña Cerro, Assistant Director General of Cultural Cooperation with the Autonomous Regions of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, who acted as the jury’s spokesperson and announced the decision along with the president of the Co-existence Award Foundation, councilwoman Mabel Deu.

Her candidacy was proposed by the Al Idrissi Cultural Association, with the support of the Union of Islamic Communities of Ceuta (UCIDCE), Luna Blanca and Intercultura. The jury was made up of representatives from Casa Mediterráneo, the Institute of Jewish Studies, the Pluralism and Co-existence Foundation, the Cervantes Institute of Tangier-Tetouan, Casa Árabe, the Sub-directorate General of Relations with the Autonomous Regions of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Inter-confessional Board of Melilla, the Consulting Committee of the Co-existence Award Foundation and the Co-existence Award Foundation.
