MADRID
Communiqué number 087 by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation
March 26, 2015

The government of Spain strongly condemns the attacks aimed in recent days against President Hadi and Yemen’s legitimate institutions. It is following these events with great concern and emphasizes the importance of preventing any military action deployed under the aegis of a formal request by the legitimate Yemeni government from leading to an irreversible confrontation with major consequences for the region.

Yet again, the government of Spain urges all of Yemen’s political and social role-players to restore dialogue as the proper path for achieving a long-lasting and inclusive solution to the current crisis reached by consensus, making it possible to resume the political transition. Only in this way can the security, stability, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen be guaranteed.

From its position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Spain is strongly committed to the leadership role which the United Nations must play in the Yemeni conflict. Along these lines, the Spanish government will support any resolution that reflects the current situation and frames any reaction within the postulates of the United Nations Charter.

Along with the sad loss of human lives, the increase in conflict in Yemen is aggravating the already critical humanitarian situation in the country, something which the international community must strive to prevent.

Likewise, the government of Spain would like to express its deep concern regarding the risk that terrorist activity and extremism among terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula, will rise, encouraged by the political instability and the climate of increasing insecurity and violence devastating Yemen.
