On Sunday, July 7, Casa Árabe is hosting a theatrical performance by the
BastaTheatre group about the struggle for the rights of the Palestinian disabled,
followed by a tasting of sustainable products and fundraising managed
by the non-profit organization Inland Campo Adentro.
The play ”63 Days of Sit-In” documents the struggle of the disability union in 2020, which went on strike for 63 days to demand comprehensive health insurance. Although the strike succeeded in getting the government in Palestine to meet the demands of the disabled community and put it into legislation, its implementation has yet to take place. However, beyond that, how were five people with disabilities able to organize and lead a movement on this scale?
The strike by the disabled at the Legislative Council in Ramallah has been one of the most important protest experiences in Palestine. The staging of the plays shows the role which art can play in raising awareness and finding support for social and political movements. By collaborating with BastaTheatre, a group known for its street performances and community engagement, the movement seeks to spread its message and reach a wider audience. The following members of BastaTheatre will be attending: Hussam Ghosheh, Rezeq I. R. Alkhatib, Hamad Ahmed Hamad Samamra, Mousa Nazzal and Afaf Asadi.
After the performance, we will be hosting a tasting of products and musical performance, to meet with others who support the Palestinian cause and in particular the project for the creation, training, cultivation and healing center BastaLand, which works on the ground in both Palestine and Spain. The tasting has been designed by Grace Denis, an artist and member of Inland, with products from the Agro-ecological Network of Madrid, inspired by Palestinian cuisine and BastaLand products, whose star food will be its Habibi Tahini sesame paste, cold-pressed in a traditional Aqabet Al Milawiyeh stone mill and roasted in a copper oven.
BastaLand is an initiative by BastaTheatre with the cooperation of Inland Campo Adentro and the former students of Inland Academy, who, after years of planning, have launched it in response to the urgent situation in Palestine.
The ticket includes a donation and can be purchased by clicking on this link. It provides entry to the performance and food tasting (drink not included). The event has been organized by the non-profit organization Campo Adentro and the proceeds will go to the project, so it is not a profit-earning commercial activity.
