“Half a Respectable Citizen,” by Hani Naqshabandi

On November 12 in Madrid, Casa Árabe will be presenting this work published by Editorial Mercurio.
Taking part in the event along with the author is the translator of the work, Noemí Fierro, and writer and Hispanist Abdul Hadi Sadoun.
Hani Naqshabandi writes that “as the belly of a man takes a step forward, reason takes another step back.” Medio ciudadano respetable (Half a Respectable Citizen) is a step forward in humanistic reasoning, a necessary, opportune reflection that draws us closer to a volatile world. To do so, Naqshabandi uses clear, warm literature in which there is even room for irony, subtle satire and enigmatic and surrealist situations that entangle the matter at heart, revealing complex arguments which we are aware of today in the West but without true proximity. Time never rests. In this novel, it is an impressionist painter, an experienced draftsman. In this exhibition hall, it has left us a work open to any interpretation. Living undoubtedly means inventing.
Hani Naqshabandi (Riyadh, 1963) has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from King Abdul Aziz University (Jeddah), with a specialization in International Relations. As a journalist, he has worked as an envoy for the newspaper Alsharq Alawsat and the magazine Almayalla in the city of Jeddah. In 1992, he moved to London, where he founded the magazine Al Rayul, then working as an assistant director of editing at the magazine Alsharq Alawsat, and later as editor-in-chief for the magazine Sayidati. He is a contributor to the television channel Dubai TV, hosting the program “Dialogue with Hani” about politics, the economy, literature and science. He currently divides his time between journalistic analysis for different media and literary creation. The well-known Lebanese publishing firm Dar Alsaqi has published all of his novels up to now: Fraud (2007), Sal-lam (2009), A Night in Dubai (2011), Half a Respectable Citizen (2013), The Tubtab of Paradise (2015), The Preacher (2017).
