Fourteenth World Day Against the Death Penalty, organized by the MAEC, CIPM and Swiss Confederation
The event was organized by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, with the cooperation of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty (CIPM) and the support of the Swiss Confederation.
The event will revolve around the question “Is the Death Penalty a Proper Response to Terrorism?: Multiple voices,” in line with this year’s slogan for the International Day Against the Death Penalty. The discussion will be held in Spanish and English, with simultaneous translations into both languages.
The event will be introduced by the State Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ybáñez Rubio, followed by a discussion panel with the members of the ICOMDP and representatives from civil society organizations. After this, a question and answer session will be held with audience participation. The event will end with a speech by the President of the ICOMDP, Mr. Mayor Zaragoza.
The panelists will discuss different global and regional perspectives, coinciding on the idea that the death penalty is not a solution, despite the serious nature of the threat posed by terrorism around the world.
Additional information:
The ICOMDP is made up of 17 personages of acknowledged international prestige in the field of human rights. These personages include former presidents, prime ministers, ministers and United Nations civil servants, and a former US governor, judge and president of the International Court of Justice, as well as a current Supreme Court judge and an academic leader. Because of its members’ high moral standards and their regionally balanced diversity, the International Commission is highly visible at the international level. It acts in a fully independent manner and strives to achieve the highest possible degree of neutrality. Its Secretariat is currently located in Madrid.
