On October 5, Casa Árabe will be presenting this work, in a conversation with the author, Palestinian poet Murid Barguti, and the work’s translator and publisher, Luis Miguel Cañada.

In addition to “Medianoche” (“Midnight”), considered the epitome of the work he has produced, this anthology, published by Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo and selected with the author’s collaboration, brings together more than fifty poems published from 1980 to 2018, providing a nearly complete overview of his oeuvre.

“The title that unites this bilingual anthology, ‘My Kingdom Is of This World’ (“Mamlakati min hada al-alam”), inevitably evokes Jesus’s response upon being asked by Pontius Pilate whether he was actually the king of the Jews (John, 18:33-37). However, beyond that association, he wishes to translate the realistic, material, earthly language, the acting language which Barguti has constructed throughout his work, in the forms of both prose and poetry, through lands of cardamom and coffee. It is a work which aspires to create beauty with words, that strives to accompany, console, denounce, protest, cry out and bear witness to a love for things big and small, often unnoticed, revealing the secrets of the earth in order to do so.”
