As part of On the Night of the Books, celebrated in Madrid on November 13, Casa Árabe and the Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo publishing firm are presenting this work about the well-known Palestinian cartoonist. The event will be posted live on our Youtube channel.
This newly published work aims to remind us about the figure of the Palestinian cartoonist and universal artist Nayi al-Ali, increasing awareness among the Spanish-speaking public about the importance of his work and the impact of his thought. In addition to the introductory texts by Teresa Aranguren and Antonio Altarriba, the volume offers us a tour through the life of Nayi al-Ali (1936-1987), as well as a very broad selection of his comics and cartoons.
A creator of one of the most recognizable icons of the Palestinian resistance, the child Handala, al-Ali put his artistic talent to work in order to send out a message: he denounced the injustice against Palestine, with the refugee population at its very core. Al-Ali was brutally murdered in London just four months before the outbreak of the First Intifada. Though on the third anniversary of his death, Scotland Yard reopened the investigation, the perpetrator of this crime has not yet been discovered.
In order to discuss his work and legacy, Casa Árabe will be speaking with journalist Teresa Aranguren and comic artist and critic Antonio Altarriba, as well as the author’s son, Khalid al-Ali.
