Scheherezade’s story

During Women’s Week, our monthly oral storytelling session of “The Arabian Nights” pays tribute to the tales’ main character, telling her story from beginning to end. This session will be held on Saturday, March 12 in Madrid and on Thursday, March 17 in Cordoba. Tickets are now being sold online.

This Arab narration has given us a great heroine, the true muse of world storytelling: Scheherezade. The epitome of female characters, Scheherezade’s story is simply magnificent, offering herself to save all women through a truly surprising psychological game. At this session of “The Arabian Nights” during Women’s Week, we are paying homage to her by telling her story from beginning to end, through the voice and gestures of storyteller Héctor Urién.

Héctor Urién (Madrid, 1977) makes a living from storytelling. As a professional storyteller, he performs his art and stage work at theaters in Spain and Latin America. Drawn by his curiosity and and a deeply ingrained scientific streak, Urién has developed his own regular storytelling workshop in Madrid, where students and teacher discover the inner workings of stories and the mystery of oral storytelling together. As a storyteller on stage, his most original and exciting project has to do with The Arabian Nights, which he continues to tell every Tuesday night at a small theater in downtown Madrid. A short, straightforward storyteller, he has taken part in several national and international festivals and co-directs the annual festival “Ávila de cuento.” He has had several essays published, including La narración fractal: arte y ciencia de la oralidad (Fractal Storytelling: Art and science of orality,
Palabras del candil, 2015), El arte de contar bien una historia (The Art of Telling a Good Story, Planeta, 2001), Teoría y práctica de la narranción fractal (Fractal Storytelling Theory and Practice, Amazon Dkp, 2021).

  • “The Arabian Nights”: A special session devoted to Scheherezade

    4 euros: Tickets purchased online, the officially unemployed, Casa Árabe Language Center students and Youth Card holders, by showing the proper documentation. You may only receive one discount. Sales in advance on this website until the Friday preceding the show at 12:00 p.m. Those tickets not purchased online will go on sale the day of the event at Casa Árabe’s headquarters, one hour before the event begins (payment in cash or by credit card).

    At our headquarters in Madrid, we will be hosting yet another session of oral storytelling based on “The Arabian Nights,” performed by Héctor Urién. To mark the holding of Women’s Week, on Saturday, March 12, the stories will be based on the tale of Sheherezade.

    Through his craft and with great contemporary sensibility, storyteller Héctor Urién, using just his voice, presence and discourse, takes us on a journey to a sultan’s royal chambers, where we learn the story of Sheherezade.
