Concert for Arab oud and violin given by Egypt’s Hossam Mamoud and Austria’s Frank Stadler.

Austria Cultural Forum and Casa Árabe organize this concert, titled Der Atem der Reinheit (The Breath of Purity), to celebrate the first day of the month of Ramadan. It consists of a concert of traditional Sufi music for Arab oud and violin by the duo made up of Frank Stadler and Hossam Mahmoud.

In the ancient teachings of Sufism, purity is synonymous with a heart free of ignorance and superstition, of selfishness and fanaticism. In the heart lies the secret of life, and in one’s breath is its art. The Sufi is the lover; the loved one is God, a God who is not linked to any specific religion. Though Sufism is housed within Islam, and though the word Arab means purity, the Teachings say that in all great religions one can find the Truth: because the mystical nature of Sufism lies above and beyond religions.

Frank Stadler took his first violin class when he was just five years old. His most important teacher was Helmut Zehetmair, with whom he completed his studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. With his “Stadler Quartett,” created in 1993, he earned an excellent reputation around the world, including Spain. Stadler is a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival. Since 1999, he has been the concertmaster of the Mozarteum Orchestra, also performing as a soloist. Frank Stadler currently directs the violin class at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. http://www.frankstadler.com

Born in Cairo but a resident of Salzburg, composer and instrumentalist Hossan Mahmoud often performers as an Arab oud player, sometimes in a duo with Frank Stadler. He has been bestowed with the “Salzburg Music Award” (2005) and the “Great Arts Award” of Salzburg (2013). For years he has stood out due to his interest in the dialogue between religions and cultures, which led him to found the WÖD West-östlicher Divan association along with Frank Stadler. He is a committed musician and was not indifferent to the Arab Spring in 2011, which inspired him to create several compositions. In addition to his work as a performer, he teaches workshops and gives conferences in several countries.
