On Tuesday, March 17, Casa Árabe will be hosting the presenting of this new book by Jesús Sánchez Adalid. It has been published by Harper Collins. Discover this historical epic in which intrigue and mystery surround the main character on his journey to Samarkand.

Segovia, 1403: an envoy from the East presents King Henry III with an unusual gift, three women of extraordinary beauty. Castile is obligated to reciprocate with a gift of greater or equal value. Its choice: three royal falcons. Jesús Sánchez Adalid invites us to relive this historical epic through the eyes of Alvar, a young falconer’s apprentice who accompanies the royal embassy to guard these precious birds. Thus begins a dazzling journey that will take him across the Mediterranean to Constantinople, passing through the ruins of Troy and the splendor of Byzantium, to the steppes of Central Asia and the brilliance of Samarkand.

It is an adventure of resilience and faith, marked by storms, intrigues between the Venetians and Genoese, mysterious waylays on remote islands and the inner struggles of a boy learning to see the world through new eyes. Using exquisite, immersive prose, Sánchez Adalid serves up today’s readers with a medieval gem nearly erased from Spain’s memory, yet whose magnitude rivals the great expeditions of the past: the mythical chronicle known as the “Embassy to Tamerlane,” written by Ruy González de Clavijo in the early fifteenth century.

Sánchez Adalid will be accompanied by Jorge Urbiola and a representative from the publishing house.

Jesús Sánchez Adalid holds a degree in Law from the University of Extremadura and in Canonical Law from the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca. He completed doctoral coursework at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. After serving as a judge for two years, he studied Philosophy and Theology and is now a priest in Llerena (Badajoz). He has authored many historical novels, including La luz del Oriente, El mozárabe, El cautivo and La sublime puerta (The Sublime Porte). He was bestowed with the twelfth Fernando Lara Novel Award and the tenth Alfonso Award for a Historical Novel (2012). In 2018, he presented Los baños del pozo azul (The Blue Well Baths) at Casa Árabe.

Jorge Urbiola has served as Spain’s ambassador to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and prior to that as Deputy Director General for Eastern Europe and Central Asia with Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. In both roles, he observed that The Embassy to Tamerlane by Ruy González de Clavijo’s remains alive in the memory of many Central Asians. A staunch advocate of cultural diplomacy, he invited writer Jesús Sánchez Adalid to take part in the Embassy’s cultural program, an initiative which gave rise to “this well-deserved tribute in the form of a novel to one of the most thrilling journeys of the late Middle Ages,” as Urbiola has called it.
