On Thursday, October 16, we will be hosting yet another workshop in Cordoba to discover the archeology and history of the region through its craftsmanship, led by SextoMario. On this occasion, we will be working with “atauriques” (a form of Arabesques), and at the end of the session those taking part will have the opportunity to take home a “tree of life.” Sign up now!

These atauriques are decorative features inspired by the geometric plant figures typical of Arab architecture, found commonly in the Caliphate city of Madinat al-Zahra.

The atauriques in Madinat al-Zahra are one of the most important decorative features to be found in caliphal art. Carved in limestone, they represent Eden through a full range of symbolic plant iconography.

Those attending this workshop will build and decorate a small sample ataurique using a series of clay or plaster pieces. In order to make sure the pieces match the original forms used in Al-Andalus, we will be employing custom molds made from three-dimensional designs created by Sexto Mario.

All of the materials are provided by the organizers and are free of charge.
