A comic and a game to discover Moorish Madrid 

From January 17, 2025 until April 13, 2025

The Al Fanar Foundation, with the support of Casa Árabe, is presenting the comic book “Sira and the Water Journeys” and the urban escape game “Moorish Madrid.” Discover the hidden secrets of this city in medieval times: its most famous astronomer and its water journeys. 

You can now read the comic book “Sira and the Water Journeys,” an initiative of the Al Fanar Foundation with the support of Casa Árabe. In addition, if you have the soul of a guide, you can travel back in time with your friends or family to discover the hidden secrets of medieval Madrid, science and its most famous astronomer, Maslama al-Mayriti (Maslama of Madrid), along with Sira, a sage of the Ministry of Knowledge created in Cordoba in the time of the Umayyad caliphate, while you walk through its streets, walls and water journeys or qanats, with the Moorish Madrid Urban Escape.

These materials combine the didactic and the playful, in comic and urban escape format, through an educational app These materials combine the educational and the playful, in a comic urban escape room format, while visiting the city.

The objective is to highlight the value of the plural and diverse cultural and historical heritage of the cities of Madrid and (soon) Cordoba and, in particular, their Al-Andalus legacy, using characters and stories, so as to build bridges with the reality that surrounds us today as a substratum for the construction of a plural and common identity. Promoting curiosity for cultural diversity is a first step in a joint process of creating a richer, more inclusive and cohesive society based on empathy.

They are offered as tools for teachers of formal education and trainers of non-formal education to work on the Moorish past as a backbone element of the History of Spain and knowledge in Europe and the Mediterranean.

The comic book project on Moorish Madrid (“Sira and the Journeys by Water”) forms part of the Comics of the Mediterranean” collection, a series of comic strips aimed at primary and secondary school students that show, in a playful and informative way, some of the distinctive elements of the Mediterranean region during the era of Al-Andalus. The project, coordinated by the Al Fanar Foundation for Arab Knowledge, has been given the support of Casa Árabe and the collaboration of Casa Mediterráneo, the University of Murcia (UMU) and the SM-UV Foundation Chair of Comic Studies.

The comic’s illustrations are by Juan Álvarez, with coloring performed by Jorge G., and the script by Pedro Rojo, president of the Al Fanar Foundation; This issues has also received scientific consultation from Rafael Martínez Sánchez-Girón, a journalist, guide and expert on Arab, Islamic and Moorish Madrid (www.madridarabe.es) and Daniel Gil-Benumeya, a professor of Arabic and
Islamic Studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the scientific coordinator of the Center for Studies on Islamic Madrid (CEMI).

With these resources, Casa Árabe, in collaboration with the Al Fanar Foundation, has organized on-demand workshops for teachers and students involving the comic (primary and secondary school) and the Urban Escape Room (secondary school).
