In Spanish.

This Friday, April 17 at 6:00 p.m., we will be holding a live talk with the author to discuss her book “They’ve Always Spoken for Us” (“Siempre has hablado por nosotras”), winner of the “Estado Crítico de Ensayo” Award for 2019. The talk will be taking place on our Instagram channel.

In the book, the author tears down the patriarchy, in a brief, courageous text that defends freedom while speaking about feminism and identity.

El Hachmi makes a statement outside the genre of fiction which has allowed her to shine in the world of novels up to now, in order to break the silence and denounce a discriminatory system of male chauvinism.

Amongst other topics, we will be discussing how to avoid making feminism secondary to other causes, as well as critical education, religious exceptionalism and the writing of essays.

Najat el Hachmi was born in Morocco after her father had already emigrated to Catalonia, and she moved to the town of Vic at the age of eight. She earned her undergraduate degree in Arabic Philology from the University of Barcelona. She has been writing since she was eleven years old, in the beginning as a form of entertainment, but little by little writing grew into a way for her to channel her thoughts about feeling like she was from two places at once, and a way to bring these two worlds to which she belongs closer together. In 2004, her book Jo també sóc catalana (I Am Catalan, Too) was published. She appears as a guest speaker on the radio and has articles published in the written press. Her workEl último patriarca (The Last Patriarch) was given the Ramon Llull Award of 2008 and the Ulysse Award for a first novel in 2009, and she was a finalist for the Prix Meditérranée Étranger in 2009.
