Conference given by Pedro Rojo and Nadia Hindi, who will be speaking about the roots of the current confrontation and the uprisings from a gender-based perspective, respectively.
Casa Árabe and the Al Fanar Foundation for Arab Knowledge have organized this event, at which the country's possible future scenarios will be introduced and evaluated.
The presentations will be given by Pedro Rojo, an Arabist and the president of the Al Fanar Foundation for Arab Knowledge, and Nadia Hindi, a researcher for the Department of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Granada, at an event that will be presented by Karim Hauser, who is responsible for the Governance Area at Casa Árabe.
The conference will be divided into two parts. The first, "Iraq: Revolution, Jihadism or Partition" is the title of Pedro Rojo's most recent article, in which he analyzes the roots of the current armed confrontation, its main role-players and three potential scenarios for the future: the Syrian model, the country's partition or a political solution.
Secondly, Nadia Hindi will be presenting "The Feminine Social Agenda and the Unrest in Iraq," which depicts the unrest in Iraq from a gender-based perspective, to illustrate the situation which most Iraqi women are living through as members of the nation as a collective whole.
The presentations are being given on the occasion of the first issue of the Al Fanar Newsletter, a monographic publication that deals with the situation in Iraq. the Newsletter also includes a map showing the geographic distribution of the various armed groups fighting in that country, articles from the Arab press and an annex containing documentation. At the same time, introducing the gender-based perspective of women's role in public space means dealing with their potential forms of action, their limitations, forms of subversion and promoting gender relations.
Pedro Rojo, an Arabist and president of the Al Fanar Foundation for Arab Knowledge, has lived in the Arab world for 20 years. He is the author of a thesis titled "Iraqi Armed Resistance: Typological Analysis" and approximately twenty articles more, as well as conferences on the situation in Iraq.
Nadia Hindi, a Spanish-Iraqi researcher from the Department of Arab and Islamic Studies of the University of Granada, is currently completing her doctoral thesis on the relationship between feminism and nationalism in Iraq after 2003.
