Arab cultural resurgence through its poets

Professor Ignacio Gutiérrez de Terán, from the Universidad Autónoma de
Madrid, will be giving this lecture in Cordoba on Wednesday, March 5, as
part of our series devoted to “The Arabs and Their Poetry: A journey
across the centuries.”
Arab literature underwent a transcendental change in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries due to the influences by new schools of thought coming out of Europe and a critical review of traditional Arab heritage, especially in terms of its poetics. Romanticism, existentialism and realism became expressive and interpretative guidelines which drew a new path for Arab poetry, with innovative themes and approaches, though sometimes timid, thus modifying the structure of the qasida, or classical model of the poem. At the same time, compositions in dialectal variants or the revision of variants such as those used during the era of Al-Andalus abound.
This will all be discussed in the talk by Ignacio Gutiérrez de Terán, a professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Presenting the event will be Miguel Moro Aguilar, Casa Árabe's General Director. Moderated by Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala, a professor at the Universidad de Córdoba.
Ignacio Gutiérrez de Terán is an associate professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He specializes in contemporary history of the Arab and Islamic world and political transitions in the Middle East. Some of his most notable publications include Yemen, la clave olvidada del mundo árabe (Yemen, the Forgotten Key to the Arab World, 2014), Las revoluciones árabes: relato de un proceso en desarrollo (The Arab Revolutions: Tale of a developing process, 2017), and Qatar. La perla del Golfo (Qatar: Pearl of the Gulf, 2022). He has also translated several titles into Spanish from the Arabic, including Los susurros de las estrellas (The Quarter, 2021), by Naguib Mahfuz. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Nación Árabe and president of the Spanish Society of Arabic Language Teachers (SEDLA).
