Árabes do Brasil

The season "Árabes do Brasil" (Brazilian Arabs) shows the audience in Madrid both the diversity and the importance of Arab communities in the South American giant’s recent tradition.These activities extend from the exploration of new commercial ties to literature and cinema, covering also the Arab mark in the Brazilian abstract universe and experimental electronic music. A multidisciplinary program organised by Casa Árabe within the framework of the Festival VivAmérica from Casa América.
Business Forum: Spain-Brazil-Arab states triangulation: experiences and prospects
A gathering for businessmen, chambers of commerce and commercial aggregates where the commercial dynamics between Spain, Brazil and Arab countries will be presented and promoted.
Among the speakers, Michel Alaby, general secretary to the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce.
Monday 4th October
Place: Casa Árabe's Auditorium in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62).
Time: 11.30. Free admission.
Audiovisual and Tribune: The paths of the “mascate”
Through an audiovisual mosaic created by the photographer José Luis Mejías, Casa Árabe organizes a glance through the Brazilian Arabs, using as the starting point the figure of the mascate, the Arab peddler, pioneer in opening commercial routes all over the country.
The traces of these entrepreneurs and their descendants in the Brazilian society will be shown through a series of photographs and videos of interviews put together with stories.
A round table will follow, with the participation of José Luis Mejías and Michel Sleiman, chairman of the Instituto da Cultura Árabe de São Paulo and publisher of the magazine Tiraz.

Music: Electronic American Arabia: Livio Tragtenberg and Tarek Atoui
Livio Tragtenberg (Brazil) presents “Esfiha electrónica”. The esfiha is a kind of traditional Lebanese and Syrian pizza transformed into a popular Brazilian dish. Taking the esfiha as a crossbreeding metaphor, Tragtenberg offers a sound research on the Arab presence in the streets of São Paulo.
Tarek Atoui (Lebanon) presents “Un-drum”, a highly intense electronic performance based on a personal three-day experience during the war that took place in July 2006 in Lebanon.

Time: 19.30. Free admission subjected to space availability.
This program will be completed by the show of the cinema season “Arabs in America”, that will take place 1st to 29th October.
