Educational workshops for youths and adults: archeology and history

As part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (2018), Casa Árabe has
organized eleven training workshops for youths and adults along with
SextoMario, the goal of which is to increase sensitivity about history
and historical values in the region.
At the same time, they are an attempt to draw attention to the potential offered by our cultural heritage, as well as the various challenges which it is facing in terms of the transmission of that heritage.
All of the workshops are free of charge, though you must sign up in advance. The materials required for the activities will be provided by the organizers.
SextoMario was created based on a calling to teach History in a pleasant and entertaining way, without failing to include the basic contents that form part of our values and culture, through a broad catalogue of educational workshops and games. With this focus, the workshops strengthen skills such as paying attention, memory, psychomotor skills and coordination, while the youths learn about a wide range of aspects from our past and, in turn, reflect upon our present. SextoMario is made up of professionals with advanced degrees in Art History, History and Archeology, possessing excellent backgrounds with training on the history and archeology of Cordoba. Moreover, they possess a great deal of experience in the field of teaching, which allows them to offer those whose take part in their workshops with extensive, diversified information on the history and archeology of our past, always in accordance with the level of those participating.

Enlightened Women

Register by completing this form.In Spanish.The youngest participants will be able to create their own representation of some of the great women of Al-Andalus, with the support of our appealing illustrations, by transferring them onto templates of beads that they can take home afterwards.As for the creative adults taking part, they will get to make a brooch, a keychain and more, with the image showing their favorite woman from Al-Andalus.
The technique of Hama Beads consists of using colored beads over a physical medium with the provided template, which shows one of the most representative enlightened women from Islamic Cordoba.

Tile Puzzle

In Spanish.Those attending will create an Arab tile design. It is a simple puzzle that is, at the same time, entertaining.During the Islamic era, tiles were made up of many geometric pieces combined with one another symmetrically, developing lovely designs that covered walls, fountains and more.
At this workshop, the participants will create their own tile design using the motifs and techniques that are taught.

Geometric Design

Advanced registration required.In Spanish.At this workshop, we will teach those attending how to create their own interlaced geometric design in the style of Al-Andalus (known as “lacería”), which they will then fill with color to their own liking.Geometry, axiality and mathematics are all closely related with the art of Al-Andalus. This is a very interesting workshop open to anyone over the age of 8.

In Spanish.Participants in this workshop will be reproducing an Arab design from Cordoba’s era of the caliphs on a tile, simulating the “dry rope” technique.The goal in doing this is to increase awareness and spur practical thinking about one of the most important art techniques from the era of the caliphs, known as “manganese green” ceramics.

Al-Mulk: The power of the Caliph

In Spanish.At this activity we will be creating an al-Mulk decorative inscription by using the technique of quilling, which uses strips of paper to create very pretty drawings and shapes.The expression al-Mulk means “power” and in this case refers to the royal power of the Umayyads. This epigraphic representation can be seen over and over again in the ceramics of the caliphate and must therefore be viewed as a form of propaganda.
