On Tuesday, October 27, the Córdoba branch of Casa Árabe will host the workshop “Archaeology of Domestic Spaces and Everyday Life: Research, Conservation, and Social Benefits,” organized by Carmen González Gutiérrez, a Ramón y Cajal postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Córdoba.
The event will begin with the presentation of issue No. 22 of the journal “Awraq,” titled “Mosques in the Mediterranean Region: Archaeology, Heritage, and Past and Present Societies,” edited by Carmen González Gutiérrez herself. This issue examines mosques from archaeological, heritage, and social perspectives, addressing both their historical development and their significance in past and present societies. Research, Conservation, and Outreach on Al-Andalus Heritage Following the presentation, a workshop will take place, bringing together specialists from various institutions to discuss the challenges of archaeological research, heritage conservation, and public outreach regarding historic domestic spaces, with a special focus on initiatives carried out in different contexts within al-Andalus.
Alberto Montejo Córdoba, from the Córdoba Provincial Delegation of Culture, will deliver the workshop’s first presentation, titled “The Suburbs of Qurtuba: The Story of an Al-Andalus Tragedy”; followed by Pedro Jiménez Castillo, from the CSIC School of Arab Studies, who will present examples of archaeological and heritage interventions in eastern al-Andalus; and Alicia Hernández Robles, from NOVA University in Lisbon, who will address the research and conservation of Al-Andalus in Murcia based on the experience of the San Esteban archaeological site.
The second part of the conference will be dedicated to experiences in the dissemination and promotion of archaeological heritage. Belén Alemán Ochotorena, from the Barrio Andalusí in Almería, will present the process of research, museum curation, and promotion of this site. For his part, Rafael Blanco Guzmán, from the University of Córdoba, will analyze the potential of three-dimensional reconstructions and artificial intelligence for the study and representation of dwellings in Islamic Córdoba.
The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion titled “And After the Excavation? Research, Conservation, and Social Use of Al-Andalus Domestic Heritage,” featuring a debate between the participants and the audience that will provide an opportunity to explore in greater depth the scientific, heritage, and social challenges posed by research into these domestic spaces.
