Archeology and heritage as a way to revitalize rural areas

The conference, given by professor Juan Campos in Cordoba, will mark the
beginning of the calendar of activities in the program “We Are All
Archeology.”
The professor who heads the department of Archeology at the University of Huelva, Juan Campos, will be focusing his conference on the case of Arucci-Turobriga (Aroche, Huelva). After the presentation, there will be a musical performance given by Arabic oud player Muhannad Dughem.
This activity will mark the beginning of the activities forming part of the program “Arqueología Somos Todos” (“We Are All Archeology”) and will be ushering in the awards ceremony for the Third Edition of the Sísifo Awards (for researching, defending and spreading archeological heritage), to be held at the Casa Árabe Auditorium on Wednesday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m., at an event presided over by Mr. José Carlos Gómez Villamandos, the rector of the University of Cordoba, and Mr. Pedro Martínez-Avial, the General Director of Casa Árabe.
Juan M. Campos has held a PhD from the University of Seville since 1988. At present, he is the chair of the Archeology Department at the University of Huelva (since 2008), a director of the Vrbanitas Research Group on Archeology and Heritage (since 1990) and a director at the Center for Research on Historical, Cultural and Natural Heritage (since 2010). His education was complemented by stays at several different universities and research centers in Europe and America. He has led 30 competitive projects in Europe, the Americas and Africa, focusing mainly on proto-historic and Roman archeology. As a result of this, he had been a thesis director for 16 doctoral candidates and managed the publishing of 300 different publications.
About the Sísifo Awards and the “We Are All Archeology” program
In early 2011, the Sísifo Research Group (PAIDI HUM 236; Archeology Department, University of Cordoba) started up a scientific culture project called “Arqueología Somos Todos” (“We Are All Archeology”), which later led to creation of the cultural association given the same name. It defends and advocates for the proper dissemination of Cordoba’s past as a key to upholding research on it, its protection and its proper appreciation. Archeology needs society view to it as a useful science which is able to provide intellectual and aesthetic stimulation, but also important sociocultural and economic benefits. It is fair and necessary for Archeological Heritage to break away from the strictly academic and scientific realm and to give back to society, in the broadest sense of the term. After nearly five years of work, “We Are All Archeology” has improved the historical and archeological training of Cordoba’s society on every level. However, it is still seeking the consolidation of a model for research, management and dissemination of archeological information in a global, sustainable manner, on the sidelines of political cycles, combining synergies with all types of entities (both public and private), while allowing the proper transference of Archaeological Heritage to society, thus benefiting a cross-cutting focus which is desirable and, at the same time, logical.
