Casa Árabe, with the cooperation of Loyola University of Andalusia, is organizing this seminar as part of our “Country Focus: Sudan” program, focusing on artistic expressions and the current political situation in Sudan, marked by internal conflict, ethnic tension and a political transition filled with challenges. It will be held on Tuesday, November 19.

This space for analysis, in which the general public, students, scholars, researchers and lovers of Arab culture can take part, will help us gain a better understanding of the current situation in Sudan and the challenges the country is facing on its path towards stability and peace.

The opening round table discussion will include talks by the Ambassador of Sudan in Spain, Maha Suleiman Taha Ayoub, and the Diplomatic Mission Advisor, Shaza Abdelaziz Kamil Abdelaziz.

After this, there will be participation by Celia Murias, who will be discussing gender, feminisms and the political economics of natural resources; Roland Marchal, a sociologist who specializes in the politics of Sudan, and artist Hassan Musa. The colloquium will be moderated by Javier Rosón (Casa Árabe) and María Ángeles Alaminos Hervás (a professor of International Relations with the Department of International Studies, Loyola University of Andalusia).

SCHEDULE:

- 10:00 a.m.: Opening

- 10:30-11:10 a.m.: Roland Marchal. Social and military analysis of post-Islamic Sudan
At his conference, Marchal will be addressing the country’s social and military restructuring after the fall of Omar al-Bashir’s Islamic government in the Sudanese Revolution of 2018-2019, starting with the mark it left behind on society, economy and operation of the Sudanese state as a result of the coup d’état of June 1989 and the conflicts that came about thereafter. Therefore, the war that broke out in April 2023 has been both a power struggle pitting two segments of the state forces against each other, as well as the rekindling of the social and regional tensions that had contributed to the fall of the Islamic-military regime. According to Marchal, this war highlights the existence of a whole plurality of scenarios for the country’s future in a system increasingly polarized by regional and international competition.

- 11:10-11:40 a.m.: Break

- 11:40 a.m.-12:20 p.m.: Celia Murias. Participation by women: specific challenges and impacts.
In her speech, Murial will be briefly analyzing women’s participation and organization throughout the country’s history, explaining the role that women played in the December 2018 revolution. She will also be analyzing the main fields of action among women’s organizations and the specific impacts on their lives and rights, as well as describing some proposed advancements during the period of transition. Finally, she will be addressing some key issues regarding the situation of women within the context of conflict.

- 12:20- 1:00 p.m.: Hassan Musa. Sudan, a conflict between modernities.
Musa is an artist who creates images with the goal of influencing people involved in social conflicts. Through his talk, he will be introducing us to the current political situation in Sudan, since he learned early on that creating art is cross-cutting with political events. In his intervention, he will be discussing democracy as a “Spoils of War” model that threatens the fragile stability in Arab societies. He will also be introducing the artistic environment in Sudan and its current status, approaching this from the perspective of his own experience and creative work. - 1:00-1:40 p.m.: Questions and conclusions.
