With a foreword by Rosa María Calaf, the book intends to provide honest reflections upon the gradual appearance of women covering conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and their impact on the narrative about the region. Since the 1990s, the term “women and children” has become synonymous with the word “victims.” Women, accounting for 50% of the population in these conflict-ravaged countries, were reduced to helpless, two-dimensional, pitiful characters in the stories told by men about wars fought by men. In this volume, six female journalists: Natalia Sancha, Khabat Abbas, Maya Gebeily, Catalina Gómez Ángel, Eman Helal and Nancy Porsia, show us the realities they have encountered in patriarchal, sexist and predominantly Muslim societies, where even life and death are segregated by gender. However, instead of reflecting on what has been forbidden to women, they write about what they, and only they, can see from their position as female journalists. In doing so, we discover all the ways in which women are not the “helpless victims” we have been told.
