On Wednesday, December 15, Casa Árabe and Larrad Ediciones are presenting the book “Bullets for All: Six women journalists in the Middle East and the Maghreb,” to be attended by two of the book’s authors, Natalia Sancha (coord.) and Catalina Gómez Ángel. In Madrid and our Youtube channel.
With a foreword by Rosa María Calaf, the book intends to provide honest reflections upon the gradual appearance of women covering conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and their impact on the narrative about the region. Since the 1990s, the term “women and children” has become synonymous with the word “victims.” Women, accounting for 50% of the population in these conflict-ravaged countries, were reduced to helpless, two-dimensional, pitiful characters in the stories told by men about wars fought by men. In this volume, six female journalists: Natalia Sancha, Khabat Abbas, Maya Gebeily, Catalina Gómez Ángel, Eman Helal and Nancy Porsia, show us the realities they have encountered in patriarchal, sexist and predominantly Muslim societies, where even life and death are segregated by gender. However, instead of reflecting on what has been forbidden to women, they write about what they, and only they, can see from their position as female journalists. In doing so, we discover all the ways in which women are not the “helpless victims” we have been told.
The event will include the participation of journalists Natalia Sancha, the book’s coordinator, and Catalina Gómez Ángel. It will be introduced and moderated by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Relations Coordinator.
Catalina Gómez Ángel. She grew up in the mountains of Colombia’s coffee-growing region. In 2007, she quit her job writing for the cultural section of the magazine Semana de Bogotá to leave for Iran and study Persian while attempting to build a career as a freelance correspondent. After a first year of relative calm, the rise of the Green Movement in Iran in 2009 and the subsequent popular uprisings in the region completely changed the landscape. Since then she has focused her work not only on Iran, but also on Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, where she tracked the war against the Islamic State very up-close.
Natalia Sancha. Based in Beirut from 2008 to 2021, Natalia Sancha has been a correspondent for El País in the Middle East. An Andalusian reporter in love with the Arab world, for the last decade she has covered the popular protests in that region and has chronicled the rise and fall of the self-styled Islamic State, as well as the mass exodus of Syrian refugees to neighboring countries and Europe. Fed up with clichés about veils and bearded men, she set out to build bridges between audiences on both shores of the Mediterranean, with a special focus on Syria. As a photographer and reporter, she has covered the wars and uprisings that have shaken the Middle East from Lebanon and Egypt to Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.
