On November 6 and 7, the city of Cáceres hosted a study visit organized by Wazo Coop as part of the European project known as: Green Heritage: Nurturing a Sustainable Future in the Gardens of Time,” financed by the Creative Europe program. 

The initiative brought together representatives from various sectors to reflect on the relationship between the environment and cultural heritage through exchanges with local partners and experts from institutions and organizations like the Museum of Cáceres, the University of Extremadura, the Extremadura Tourism Cluster, the La Sindicalista Estudio Art Gallery and the Valdefuentes Ethnographic Museum. 

The visit provided a firsthand look at the legacy of Al-Andalus, along with other elements of the province’s rich historical and natural heritage, thanks to contributions from specialists such as Marta Lozano, director of Wazo Coop; Juan José Cerezo, of Extremadura Curiosa; and Raquel Preciados, director of the Museum of Cáceres. Through their presentations, participants had the chance to explore the connections between heritage, identity and sustainability within the context of Extremadura. 

The program includes tours of the Almohad city walls, the Albalat Treasure at the Museum of Cáceres and the Old Jewish Quarter, providing an opportunity to understand how historical heritage, in all its dimensions, can contribute to a more sustainable and participatory future. 

This activity forms part of the work that Casa Árabe has been carrying out since its inception in order to highlight and promote Al-Andalus heritage, particularly through its headquarters in Cordoba and the Legacy of al-Andalus that remains in the city. Within the context of the project known as Green Heritage, the institution promotes environmental education initiatives focused on cultural heritage, with a special focus on Moorish courtyards and the Medina Azahara Archeology Complex, linking sustainability and historical heritage. 

About the Green Heritage Project
Green Heritage: Nurturing a Sustainable Future in the Gardens of Time is a European project that integrates cultural heritage, especially archeological parks and heritage sites, with sustainability education intended for future generations. The initiative links the conservation of cultural sites with active environmental learning, transforming these spaces into living classrooms where sustainable practices from the past inspire action in the present. The project also includes the use of Minecraft at the participating archeological sites: Medina Azahara (Spain), Cáceres (UNESCO World Heritage City), Simonov Zaliv (Slovenia), Ostia Antica (Italy) and Viminacium (Serbia), as an innovative tool for engaging young people in exploring heritage and sustainability through creative and digital learning.

This event series is being coordinated by the Institute of Archaeology (Serbia) and has received support from the Ostia Antica Archeology Park and Maker Camp (Italy), as well as the University of Primorska (Slovenia), Mapa das Ideias (Portugal), the “Polytechnic” Academy of Applied Studies (Serbia), Wazo Coop and Casa Árabe (Spain). Together, these organizations are promoting a new way to understand the relationship between culture and sustainability, integrating historical heritage into today’s educational and environmental awareness processes.
