Screening held on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The United Nations established the date of November 25 to become the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. As part of this commemoration, we have scheduled a screening of the film 678 (with the Spanish-language title El Cairo 678), which deals with the harassment of women in Egypt. This screening is being held as a calling to end the persistent discrimination against women around the world.
Based on the real story of three women and their determination to defend themselves against the sexual harassment suffered by women in Egypt, when one of them decides to fight back and stabs one of her assailants, she becomes an anonymous heroine who revolutionizes the city. She gets the help of two other women who turn her into their heroine. The women take part in a discussion which arises from a surprising difference of opinion about sexual harassment that reveals an underlying classicist resentment. 678 offers us an in-depth analysis of causes and effects of this social epidemic, demonstrating the deadly consequences of silence and the acceptation of denial as a solution.
We invite you to join the campaign ÚNETE, to put an end to violence against women, inviting us to “paint the world orange,” using the color chosen by this campaign as the symbol of a brighter future without violence.
