For yet another year, Casa Árabe is taking part in International Architecture Week 2024, which is celebrating its twenty-first edition this year. Thanks to this initiative, you will get the chance to tour the Escuelas Aguirre building on Thursday, October 10. TICKETS SOLD OUT.
The Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid occupies the Escuelas Aguirre building, which dates back to 1881. It was officially opened in 1886. The building is one of the most representative works by architect Emilio Rodríguez Ayuso in Madrid’s neo-Mudéjar style.
Designed in a two-story free-standing rectangular shape, the building’s surface area on the main floor is reduced to form a U shape, with a courtyard left open onto the rear façade. Above the stairwell is a 37-meter tower, with three brick bodies and a glazed metal attic, a unique feature in Madrid’s skyline.
The building has been enlarged and refurbished on several occasions by professionals like Luis Bellido González, Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta, Bernardo Giner de los Ríos and Guillermo Costa Pérez-Herrero, and its functions have ranged from being a school to housing municipal offices. Since 2008, it has been home to the Madrid headquarters of Casa Árabe.
The tours will be held on Thursday, October 10 at 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. You must register in advance. The capacity is limited to 25 people for each tour. SOLD OUT.
International Architecture Week is an initiative by the COAM Architecture Foundation and the Official Architects’ Association of Madrid, with the cooperation of the Municipal Government and Autonomous Regional Government of Madrid. This twenty-first edition has been set for October 4 to 17 and is meant to provide a magnificent opportunity to get to know more about Madrid’s rich architectural heritage. At this edition, Lima, Peru is the guest city and country, with the participation of the Embassy of Peru in Spain and the Regional Architects’ Association of Lima, Peru.
Over the course of 14 days, architecture lovers will have the opportunity to visit 60 buildings and go on more than 35 thematic tours in different parts of Madrid. It is an extensive program that will bring together nearly 300 free activities including exhibitions, events, conferences, tours of buildings, urban walking tours and children’s activities for all audiences.
The origin of Architecture Week dates back to 1997, when the International Union of Architects (IUA) proclaimed the first Monday of October to be World Architecture Day, coinciding with World Habitat Day, established by the UN General Assembly 12 years earlier, as a way to encourage reflection on the state of our local environments and cities.
