For yet another year, the institution is contributing to the schedule of
events at this literary festival, with the participation of Iraqi
writer Ahmed Saadawi. This will be taking place on Sunday, September 22.
Saadawi will be holding a conversation with Spanish journalist Mónica G. Prieto, a Middle East expert. The talk will be titled “Reporting on a Displaced Iraq,” and in it the two will discuss the reasons for the war’s brutality and its consequences.
One day later, the writer will go to Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid to present his novel “Frankenstein in Baghdad.” The two events have been co-organized with the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation, and the cooperation of the publishing firm Libros del Asteroide.
The novelist, poet and screenwriter Ahmed Saadawi has been one of the most important literary voices from Iraq ever since he was included in 2010 in Beirut39, a selection of the most important 39 writers under the age of 40 in Arab literature. His work Frankenstein in Baghdad has earned awards such as the International Arab Narrative Award (2014) and the Grand Prix de L’Imaginaire (2017), as well as being selected for the Man Booker International Prize (2018). In the book he shows how violence has already come to form part of everyday life.
