Casa Árabe, Fundación Educación para el Empleo, CIDOB and Esglobal present the documentary “Khamsa.”

The Arab countries on the Mediterranean not only have the highest percentage of youths in their populations amongst any in the world, bu also the highest levels of youth unemployment, which creates a huge barrier to economic growth, development and stability in these countries. Millions of young Arab men and women are unemployed or underemployed, and many do not have access to the education system or professional training. Others notice that their training does not fit in with what employers are seeking. A more customized education might create a better balance between supply and demand in labor, at a time when youths are being exposed to profound social, cultural and political transformations.

Khamsa (Marc Almodóvar, 50 min.)
Five youths, five Mediterranean towns, five stories: Hiba, Hakeem, Seif, Nina and Ayoub. Beirut, Alexandria, Djerba, Timezrit and Casablanca. A journey through the worries and dreams and five people united by a generation and the waters of the same sea, but separated by distant horizons and environments. Through their own voices and recordings made with their own eyes, we will take a tour through the worlds of these five main characters. The film forms part of the SAHWA project, led and coordinated by CIDOB and financed by the Seventh European Commission Framework Program (FP7).

Speakers:
  • Marc Almodóvar, the director of the documentary, and a journalist and documentary filmmaker.
  • Elena Sánchez-Montijano, a senior researcher at CIDOB and the scientific coordinator of the SAHWA project.
  • Salvatore Nigro, global vice-president and managing director in Europe in the field of Education for Employment - Global (EFE-Global).
