Children’s Archeology Workshops

Oil Lamps, the Light of Al-Andalus15/02/2014. CÓRDOBA

On the occasion of the exhibition “Madinat Qurtuba: City and Matter”, Casa Árabe is organizing a series of children’s workshops related with the subject matter of the exhibition, which will be held from October 19, 2013 through March 8, 2014.

The goal of these workshops, coordinated by the group “Arquelogía somos todos” (“We Are All Archeology”), is to promote knowledge of the city’s historical and archeological heritage amongst youths in the most fun and entertaining way, so as to increase their awareness of its value.

The workshops, intended for children between the ages of 6 and 12 years, last approximately two hours, including one educational section to provide the children with general notions about archeology, and a practical portion in which they get hands-on experience. The number of spaces is limited, so in order to participate it is necessary to sign up in advance at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9), Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The registration fee is 5 euros for each workshop.


Workshop 1. Excavation of an Islamic House 
Recreation of an archeological excavation. In one of the courtyards of the School of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Cordoba, part of an Al-Andalus dwelling has been reconstructed. Covered by sand and earth of different colors and with furnishing materials typical of the tenth and eleventh centuries, it will allow the participants to understand that it is possible to make History using these remains and to reconstruct the life of our ancestors from Al-Andalus with them.

Location: Archeodrome. University School of Philosophy and Letters (Plaza del Cardenal Salazar, 3 – Cordoba)

Workshop 2. Islamic Ceramics
By directly working with reproductions, the children will get to know how the different shapes and decorative motifs appearing in Islamic ceramics were made, as well as reproducing them with their own hands.

Workshop 3. Tiles of Al-Andalus
During the workshop, the monitors will explain the tiling techniques used in the era of Al-Andalus so that the kids can appreciate archeological remains not only for their artistic value, but also because of their production process. The children will then be able to reproduce their own mosaic on a piece of cardboard and take it home as a souvenir.

Workshop 4. Oil Lamps, the Light of Al-Andalus
The monitors will provide a practical explanation of the use and production of lamps in Al-Andalus, using as a reference the best-known models from the era, so that the children can reflect on the different uses of fire and lighting, and to make their own lamp.

Workshop 5. Arabesques: Gardens of Stone 
This activity focuses on knowledge about arabesques: the plant motifs, materials and placement on walls, and will allow children to reproduce this type of decoration on construction paper.
