Cinema in Cordoba

Casa Árabe has organized a series of screenings of interesting and entertaining quality fiction films from March 1-22, including three movies that have premiered in recent years. The showings have been organized with the cooperation of the Second International Festival 14.4 Km.

The first film to be shown will be Mascarades (Masquerades), a hilarious comedy by Lyes Salem about a young and prideful dreamer who makes up a lie which ends up influencing his neighbors’ destiny. In Sur la Planche (On the Edge), by Leila Kilani, two youths refuse to put up with difficulties of their daily routine, so they plot a risky plan to escape their situation. Last of all, Death for Sale, by Faouzi Bensaïdi, is the dramatic and captivating story of three young little thieves who, convinced that they can change their lives, find themselves wrapped up in something that gets out of hand.

Synopses



Mascarades (Masquerades), by Lyes Salem, (Algeria and France, 2008, 92 min.)
Mounir, a prideful braggart, wants everyone living in his little village to admire him, but he has his Achilles’ heel: his sister Rym. One night while quite drunk, he announces in the town square that a rich foreign businessman has asked for his sister’s hand in marriage. All the townspeople envy her. Trapped by his own lie, he will change his people’s destiny without even having meant to. An Algerian production and candidate for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, it was nominated for the César Prize for Best Debut Film and formed part of the Panorama section at the Tribeca International Film Festival.

Sur la planche (On the Edge), by Leila Kilani (Morocco, Germany and France, 2011, 106 min.)
In Tangier, Badia and Imane, two Moroccan twenty-year-olds, work at a shrimp packing company, doing a rough, humiliating job. Badia’s hands are filled, but her mind lazes away. She wears a perfume of lies to help remove the smell of shrimp, and at night she makes her way through life with the freedom and energy of someone who refuses to give up.
This production took part in the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Film in Motion Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

Death for Sale, by Faouzi Bensaïdi (Belgium, France, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, 2011, 117  min.)
The story of three pickpockets in Tetouan, Morocco, who join forces to rob the biggest jewelry shop in the city, each with his own reason for taking part. Malik is madly in love with Dounia and wants to help her out of the world of prostitution. Allal wants to be somebody in the drug trafficking world. And Soufiane wants to take revenge on society. This project was selected by L’Atelier de Cannes and International Relations ARTE.

The films will be shown at the Casa Árabe Auditorium in Córdoba (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9) at 8:00 p.m. in the original language version with subtitles in Spanish. Free entrance until the room’s capacity is full.
