Emirati film is like a mirror in which the members of a society made up of more than 200 different nationalities, with only 10% coming from the region itself, can look at itself. This variety of peoples and cultures is the result of economic development which the country has been experiencing since the early 1970’s because of the exploitation of petroleum. This advancement has led to the fact that Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become two of the most important focal points for creativity, production and co-production throughout all of the Middle East. With this stage as a backdrop, expert Alejandra Val will be speaking about the development of the local film industry, which has come into existence thanks to this economic growth. She will also give us a closer look at the most important directors, both men and women, to have emerged over the last decades.
Alejandra Val Cubero
With a PhD in Information Sciences from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, she is currently on leave from the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid. Interested in cinema from the periphery, she has completed post-doctoral research at Harvard University (USA) and Jahawarlal Nehru University (India), as well as working as a consultant with Altai Research in Kabul (Afghanistan), cooperating with international organizations. She is currently a teacher at Zayed University, which is located in Dubai (UAE).
