Concert: Al Turaz Al Andalusi
Casa Árabe, the Instituto de Músicas del Mediterráneo and the Berklee College of Music are organizing this concert in Madrid.
Al Turaz Al Andalusi is a music ensemble with roots in Al-Andalus and Sufi dance (tannoura) from Syria. Salah Sabbagh, a percussionist born in Aleppo who has been living in Spain for several years now, has managed to bring together a varied group of musicians with diverse musical backgrounds and careers. The ensemble was created when Mahmoud Fares arrived in Spain in the year 2014. One of the best-known singers from his country with a traditional Middle Eastern musical repertoire, he joined Inshad Dini, a highly prestigious performer of Andalusi Sufi songs, and dancer Babli, a noteworthy specialist in the field of Sufi dance.
The group has achieved notoriety as a stable ensemble and has taken part in many different events and festivals in Colombia, Denmark, France, Portugal and Spain. Its latest concerts have taken place at the Sacred Music Festivals of Bogota and Madrid, as well as performing at the Folk Festival in Zaragoza, Spain.

Mahmoud Fares, a performer of songs from the Sufi tradition and Al-Andalus, was born in Aleppo, Syria. At the age of ten, he sang alongside his father, one of the finest singers in Syria, educated at the Altakaya school. He has been a member of many different well-known groups in Syria and has been a very popular performer amongst Syrian audiences. At the age of 20, he created a group specializing in Sufi songs, known as Al Inshad. Throughout his career, he has given guidance to many singers about the modes of singing and basic musical study. He is currently the lead singer for the group Al Turaz Al Andalusi, which was set up when he arrived in Spain.
Yusuf Mezghildi Born in Tetouan, Mezghildi studied Arab Andalusi music and classical music at the Tetouan Conservatory for ten years. He learned basic music studies and the Arabic oud, then specializing in the qanun. He has been a member of many different music ensembles in his country and abroad.
Houssam Hammoumi Born in Fez, Hammoumi has mastered the Arabic oud and woodwind instruments, such as the Arabic flute and the kawala. He completed his studies at the Conservatory of Andalusi Music in Fez and has also been a member of various Andalusi and Sufi music groups in many countries, including Portugal and Spain.
Salah Sabbagh Born in Aleppo, Syria, Sabbagh reached Spain in 1982, having guided his career not only towards the music of his own country, but also towards ancient Spanish Christian music, as well as Sephardic, Egyptian, North Africa and Balkan music. He is a master of percussion instruments such as the darbuka, drum, bendir and tambourine. Since 1983, he has been a member of many music groups in our country. In recent years, he has directed the groups Umaya and Al Turaz Al Andalusi which perform Andalusi Sufi music and dance from Syria.
Mohamed Babli Born in Aleppo, Syria, Babli is a Sufi whirling dervish and performs a tannoura dance known as the mawlawiya. She learned these Sufi dances form her father and later perfected other folklore dance styles from her country, including the dance of Aleppo, the sword dance, and others.
