On Saturday, July 3, we will be hosting this performance with a fusion of Arab and European Renaissance music in our Madrid garden, with musical accompaniment by Said El Maloumi and Antonio Toledo.

Many are the features which unite Arab music with music from the European Renaissance. One example of this is the great resemblance between instruments like the Arabic oud and the Renaissance lute, or a percussion instrument known as the darbuka, a cup-shaped drum originally from Egypt, which became popular within the European repertoire of instruments. In Casa Árabe’s outdoor space on Saturday July 3, we will get the chance to discover just how close together these two worlds came through a musical fusion between them, enjoying the talent of two internationally renowned instrumentalists: Driss El Maloumi (Arabic oud) and Andreas Prittwitz (wind instruments), who will be melding their music in a fine virtuoso performance that characterizes them both. Alongside them in a quartet, we will also see Said El Maloumi (Moroccan percussion) and Antonio Toledo (Renaissance archlute).

Andreas Prittwitz (Munich, 1960) has collaborated as a recorder soloist in a wide range of European orchestras. He has studied clarinet and saxophone through self-teaching, entering the world of improvisation (jazz, folk, world music). Specializing as an artistic producer and backing musician, he has worked with the most important figures in the Spanish music scene. In 2009, he was nominated as Best Classical Music Performer for the album “Looking Back over the Renaissance” with Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Eduardo Paniagua. In 2018, he received the “Serondaya de las Artes Award” for cultural innovation.

Driss El Maloumi (Morocco, 1970) received solid training in Arabic and Western classical music after graduating with a degree in Arabic Literature. Since 2010, he has been the director of the Agadir Music Conservatory Agadir. Known internationally as “The Oud Poet,” he has been bestowed with several awards for his career. These include the “Chevalier dans l’ordre des arts et des lettres” awarded by the Ministry of Culture in France (2016), and the “Ziryab des virtuoses” Award given by the Morocco National Music Committee, an institution belonging to UNESCO-Paris (2010). El Maloumi works with internationally renowned performers and composes music for films and documentaries.
