From April 26 to 30, Casa Árabe, with the cooperation of the Municipal Institute of Tourism of Cordoba (IMTUR), invites you to take part in this series of conferences, in which we will be discussing aspects in the history, urban planning, architecture and culture of Umayyad Qurtuba with María Teresa Casal.
As part of the scheduled events during the Nights of Ramadan 2021, Casa Árabe, with the cooperation of the Municipal Tourism Institute of Cordoba (IMTUR), has planned this educational activity for heritage site guides and the general public. Throughout these five chronologically and thematically arranged conferences, different aspects in the history, urban planning, architecture and culture of Umayyad Qurtuba will be discussed.
The fascination for Al-Andalus, its culture and legacy have been a constant throughout history. The Iberian Peninsula formed part of Islamic civilization for eight centuries (eighth-fifteenth centuries), leaving an unquestionable mark behind. Archeology and history are essential tools for understanding the social, economic and cultural transformations that took place after the arrival of Islam. The marks left behind by Al-Andalus can be felt not only in the spaces where the powerful and the economic and religious elites were based, but also in the city layout, domestic architecture and culture of al-Andalus.
María Teresa Casal García has a PhD in Heritage and Archeology from the University of Cordoba. She is a specialist in Archeology and the Medieval History of Al-Andalus. She has a great deal of experience in research and running archeological excavations, backed by her years of work as a researcher under the agreement between the Municipal Urban Planning Management Entity and the University of Cordoba, later having continued at the History Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, Madrid). She has carried out several research stays abroad (University Paris-Sorbonne) and has authored more than thirty specialized publications.
