From July 12 to 16, we offer every day on our YouTube channel this series of five lectures in which Professor María Teresa Casal addresses aspects of the history, urban planning, architecture and culture of the Umayyad Qurtuba.
The fascination for Al-Andalus, its culture and legacy have been a constant throughout history. The Iberian Peninsula formed part of Islamic civilization for eight centuries (eighth-fifteenth centuries), leaving an unquestionable mark behind. Archeology and history are essential tools for understanding the social, economic and cultural transformations that took place after the arrival of Islam. The marks left behind by Al-Andalus can be felt not only in the spaces where the powerful and the economic and religious elites were based, but also in the city layout, domestic architecture and culture of al-Andalus.
María Teresa Casal García has a PhD in Heritage and Archeology from the University of Cordoba. She is a specialist in Archeology and the Medieval History of Al-Andalus. She has a great deal of experience in research and running archeological excavations, backed by her years of work as a researcher under the agreement between the Municipal Urban Planning Management Entity and the University of Cordoba, later having continued at the History Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, Madrid). She has carried out several research stays abroad (University Paris-Sorbonne) and has authored more than thirty specialized publications.
