On Wednesday, April 30, our event series dedicated to Arab poetry will be coming to an end with this lecture by Prof. Nader Al Jallad, from the University of Cordoba. He will be performing an overview of the symbolism, time periods and authors in the most recent of Palestinian poetry.
During his conference, Prof. Al Jallad will be exploring Palestinian poetry as a means of resistance, remembrance and national identity. Drawing on his personal experience, he will be explaining how poetry reflects the suffering of the Palestinian people, from the Nakba in 1948 and up to the present day, including the Naksa in 1967. Three branches of Palestinian literature can be identified: one that arose within Israel, another in the the occupied territories and a third among the Diaspora. Highlighting authors such as Mahmoud Darwish, Fadwa Tuqan and Khaled Juma, themes such as exile, identity, struggle, nostalgia and the role of women are analyzed. Poetry is presented as a witness to the tragedies experienced and also as a symbol of hope, using images like the olive tree, the earth and bread to connect with the lost homeland.
