From September 17, 2013 until October 06, 2013

Casa Árabe is cooperating with the tenth edition of the Cosmopoetics Festival, providing its headquarters to host the commemorative exhibition for the 50th anniversary of the Arab Poetry Festival which was held in Cordoba in May of 1963, a festival which included participation by different poets and authorities from all over the Arab world.

The event was one of the first international cultural events to take place in Cordoba’s modern history and brought together the most important political authorities, intellectuals and poetry experts in the Spanish-Arab world.

The opening event will be attended by the General Director of Casa Árabe, Eduardo López Busquets, as well as the Cultural Delegate of the Municipal Government of Córdoba, Juan Miguel Moreno Calderón, and will take place on Friday, September 27 at 11:30 a.m.

The exhibition, produced by the Cultural Department of the Municipal Government of Cordoba, held as part of Cosmopoetics and curated by Virginia Luque, a historian and cultural manager who specializes in the Arab world, is made up of historical photographs and never before published sound and audiovisual No-Do documentary films, which are used to provide a look back on the days when the festival was held, offering an overview of the enclaves, locations, protocol and parallel activities which took place during the festival, as well as remembering some of the poems which were recited.

The exhibit will be on display until October 6 at the Casa Árabe Auditorium in Cordoba (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9), from Monday to Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 6:30 p.m.; Sundays and holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Free entrance.

Arab Poetry Festival (Cordoba, 1963)

Organized by the Municipal Government of Cordoba, this event was held during the week of May 12-18, 1963 and was one of the first international cultural events in the city’s modern history.

It brought together the most important diplomatic authorities and poetry experts from the Spanish-Arab world, including Nizzar Qabbani, Salma Haffar and the Cántico Group. The most reputable Arabists from Spain and abroad also met during academic sessions held on Ibn Hazm, with personages of the stature of Luis Seco de Lucena, Pedro Martínez Montávez, Miguel Cruz Hernández and Henri Terrasse.

The festival paid homage on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the death of Ibn Hazm, to whom two city monuments were dedicated. That festival, in which each Arab country offered poetry sessions, was held along with an intensive schedule of cultural activities, including concerts, theatrical performances (Tawfiq Hakim) and exhibitions (Mohammed Sabry).
