The Complutense Summer School (ECV) is giving this second edition of the course ”International politics and regional changes in North Africa and the Middle East: Origins, crisis and interventions, to be held in Madrid from July 9 to 27, Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a total of 75 class hours, taught by professors and a specialist on the contemporary Arab world.
Directed by Isaías Barreñada and Rafael Bustos García, both professors of International Relations at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), with the support of Casa Árabe and the OPEMAM (Political and Electoral Observatory of the Arab and Muslim World), the course seeks to provide tools for analysis and gathering information to understand and interpret the region’s reconfiguration and the political transformations that have taken place in the Middle East and North Africa since the protests in 2011.
Universidad Complutense students receive a 50% discount off the registration fee. Moreover, anyone can apply for different forms of aid granted by the General Foundation of the UCM, such that, though the general full registration fee is €780, with aid the amount may be reduced to €546 (general registration fee aid), €390 (for UCM students, administrative staff and service personnel), or €195 (students with an official degree of disability equal to at least 33%). The aid is granted automatically in the order of registration, and therefore students must pay the registration fee, directly subtracting the amount of the aid from the full fee amount. Apply for aid before it is all taken!
The goal of the course is to analyze the complexity of socio-political structures and the dynamics that have taken hold through a multidisciplinary approach (sociology, political science, economics, demographics and international relations), finding relationships between the changes being experienced in Arab societies and nations and those occurring in the regional and international arenas.
The course begins with a first set of introductory sessions on the contemporary MENA region (12 hours), which will deal with topics involving demographics and social change; political systems, civil society and social movements; economic structures and recent dynamics. After this will come a second set of sessions devoted to the outcomes after the unrest in 2011 at the domestic level (6 hours): general overview; the Tunisian and Egyptian experiences. The third set of sessions is about the region’s reconfiguration: the role of external role-players and neighboring countries (9 hours); the United States and changes in the region; foreign action by the European Union in the region; and Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran and Russia. The final set of sessions will discuss a series of case studies (28 hours), including: Syria as of 2011; the State’s breakdown in Libya and Yemen; Turkey and its role in the region; Palestine within the regional context of the Middle East; Morocco and the Western Sahara; and Human Rights and women.

a) Classes (lectured given by professors and specialists) which will cover 58-60 hours an encompass a wide range of topics and case studies;
b) Debates with guests (6 hours) which will include representatives from the Spanish UNRWA Committee, Casa Árabe and the Félix Mª Pareja Library of the AECID, as well as other options);
c) Practical analysis exercises (6-8 hours), and
d) Visit to two institutions and debate with officials (4-6 hours).

• Providing knowledge on interpreting the changes being experienced
in North Africa and the Middle East, and in particular, the
Mediterranean region.
• Providing analytical tools to relate the changes lived by Arab societies and States with the regional changes that are taking place.
• Understanding the complexity of socio-political structures and the dynamics currently existing, through a multidisciplinary approach (sociology, politics, economics, demographics and international relations).
• Contributing to training in university-level studies about the region of North Africa and the Middle East, which is one of the priorities in foreign policy action for both Spain and the European Union.
• Providing specialized training on the Arab countries in the Spanish language to students and researchers from Latin America interested in this topic, given the limited possibilities that exist to do so in their countries
• Providing analytical tools to relate the changes lived by Arab societies and States with the regional changes that are taking place.
• Understanding the complexity of socio-political structures and the dynamics currently existing, through a multidisciplinary approach (sociology, politics, economics, demographics and international relations).
• Contributing to training in university-level studies about the region of North Africa and the Middle East, which is one of the priorities in foreign policy action for both Spain and the European Union.
