Course on "Islam Today"

From April 23, 2013 until May 09, 2013

From April 11 through May 9, Casa Árabe and the School of Diplomacy have organized a course titled "Islam Today: Fundamentals, practices and international dimension."

Aware of the increasing priority and importance of Spain’s possessing in-depth knowledge of its relations with the Islamic world and the full set of dynamics and transformations which it is currently undergoing, the School of Diplomacy and Casa Árabe have decided to resume organization of this course on Islam, in a seventh, updated edition.

Organized around four large subject matter categories, which constitute an attempt to approach the complexity and many facets of Islam today, this time the course will place a greater emphasis on economic factors and Spain’s projection in the Arab and Muslim world. Without setting aside historical, cultural and religious aspects, and with a desire to make the course current and up-to-date, presentations have been included on the present political scenarios, on the transition processes after the Arab Spring, and on the most relevant economic aspects, for those who wish to have a better knowledge of the financing, investments and economic dynamics of Arab and Muslim countries, as well as the various factors in Spain’s foreign policy throughout this extensive geographic region.

The course is intended for civil servants of the Administration who, when performing their activities, are in contact with Muslim communities or the nationals of countries of Arab and Muslim cultures, as well as professionals, businesspeople, researchers, members of the academic world and, in general, anyone who is interested in the subject matter of the course. The idea is to offer an educational proposal based on both academic and scientific elements, but at the same time aimed at practical work and professional needs within a context like today’s, in which the exchanges and internationalization of Spanish companies and institutions in Arab countries are growing in number.

The classes will be given on Monday through Thursday, from April 11 to May 8, from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the School of Diplomacy, with a round table discussion at the closing event on May 9, at Casa Árabe’s headquarters (address: Calle Alcalá, 62). Spaces are limited, and the registration deadline is March 31.
