Course on the Andalusian Mudéjar

Casa Árabe headquarters (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9). The sessions will be held from September 27 through February 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The price for course registration is 50 euros. No more than 25 students.

Enrollment is now open for this course on the Mudkéjar style in Andalusia, starting on September 27 at our headquarters in Cordoba. This is the third part of an artistic education course titled “The Mudéjar Style in Spanish Architecture: The surviving art of Al-Andalus”.

Casa Árabe is offering the third part of this course at its headquarters in Cordoba. It will consist of 15 hour and a half sessions given by Professor Marisa Campillo. The purpose of the course is to provide participants with the tools necessary to describe and analyze Spanish-Muslim Mudéjar art from different eras, and to recognize and distinguish its main architectural works. The first session will be held on September 27.

After the success of the prior editions, “Approaching the Art of Al-Andalus” and “The Mudéjar Style in Spanish Architecture: Part 1,” Casa Árabe is offering this course intended for anyone who wishes to learn about Mudéjar art and analyze it in its different forms, regardless of their past academic training. The contents and corresponding guided tours, in this case of Cordoba, Jaén and Zaragoza (charged separately to those students interesting in attending), will be spread across 15 weeks from September 2022 to February 2023.

Mudéjar art is an irreplaceable set of works for anyone who wishes to learn more about our medieval past. It is the most genuine form of artistic expression that remains from a society in which Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side. It developed between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries, as the Iberian Peninsula’s territory was gradually reconquered.

Some of the factors which explain the unique phenomenon of Mudéjar art include:
- The cultural assimilation of the defeated Muslims (Mudéjars).
- The Christians’ fascination with the Islamic monuments in reconquered cities.
- Close relations with the territories of Al-Andalus not yet reconquered amid intermittent periods of war, with the regions of Al-Andalus not yet reconquered.

The Mudéjar era reveals Al-Andalus’ importance in our history and its wider influence up to the modern day. In the end, it has become a constant in Spanish art and helps define us.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
- To provide the participants with all the information required to gain better knowledge of their artistic and cultural surroundings.
- Describing and analyzing Spanish-Muslim art from different periods on the basis of historical context.
- Recognizing and distinguishing the main architectural works, using artistic language and the proper specific terminology.
- Promoting social communication through interpersonal relationships.

METHODOLOGY
The course follows an active, participatory methodology that allows those attending to form their own criteria and express them. This will be based upon:
1.- Weekly live sessions in person lasting an hour and a half. At these sessions, different teaching resources will be used, including PowerPoint presentations, videos, charts, maps, timelines etc.
 2.- Guided tours of the main artistic monuments built in this style in Andalusia, Cordoba, Madrid and Carmona (optional)

CONTENTS
THE MUDÉJAR STYLE IN SPANISH ARCHITECTURE: THE SURVIVING ART OF AL-ANDALUS. THE ANDALUSIAN MUDÉJAR”
- Introduction to Art History and architectural terminology.
- Historical context of Mudéjar art.
- How this genuine style was first formed and its later development.
- General characteristics and types of Mudéjar style work.
- Main regional locations.

- THE MUDÉJAR IN ANDALUSIA:
- Andalusia’s Mudéjar style is rich and comes in many forms, for both geographical reasons (differentiating the Andalusia of the Guadalquivir valley from the mountainous Andalusia of the Penibetic mountain range), and for historical reasons (making the necessary distinction between the Islamic predecessors from the time of Cordoba’s caliphs, the Almohads in Seville and the Nasrids of Granada).

GUIDED TOURS
- Of Zaragoza, to learn about the works located there, with a major influence by Cordoba Caliphate art, declared World Heritage Site by the UN
- Of Jaén, to become familiar with the Arab Baths, the remains of the Palace of the Constable Iranzo and the Arch of San Lorenzo.
- Tour of the Ferdinandine churches and Chapel of San Bartolomé in Cordoba.

The course contents and corresponding guided tours will be spread across 15 weeks from September 2022 to February 2023.
