Course on the Mudéjar Style in Spanish Architecture

As of September 28, teacher Marisa Campillo will be giving this 14-session course in Cordoba. SOLD OUT.
Casa Árabe is offering the second part of this course at its headquarters in Cordoba, consisting of 14 weekly sessions lasting an hour and a half. They will be given by professor Marisa Campillo, whose goal is to provide participants with the tools necessary to characterize and analyze Spanish-Muslim art across different eras, and to recognize and distinguish its main architectural works.
After the success of last two editions of the course “Approaching the Art of al-Andalus,” Casa Árabe is now offering the course “Mudéjar Style in Spanish Architecture: The surviving art of Al-Andalus.” It is intended for anyone who wishes to learn about Mudéjar art and analyze it in its different forms, regardless of their past academic training. The contents and guided tours of Cordoba, Seville and Toledo (which must be paid separately by those students who are interested), will be held across 14 weeks, from September 2021 to February 2022.
Mudéjar art is an irreplaceable set of works if one wishes to learn more about our medieval past. It is the most genuine artistic expression that we have of a society in which Muslims, Jews and Christians co-existed. The Mudéjar era reveals the importance of Al-Andalus in our history and its wider influence up to the present day. It has ended up becoming a constant in Spanish art and defines us.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To provide participants with all of the knowledge they need for greater awareness of the art and culture in their surrounding environment. Based on historical context, describing and analyzing Spanish-Muslim art from different periods.
Recognizing and distinguishing the main architectural works, using artistic language and the proper specific terminology.
Promoting social communication through interpersonal relationships.
METHODOLOGY
An active, participatory methodology is used which allows those participating to develop their own criteria and express them. This will be based upon:
1.- Weekly live sessions in person lasting an hour and a half.
At these sessions, different teaching resources will be used, including PowerPoint presentations, videos, charts, maps, timelines etc.
2.- Guided tours of the most important artistic monuments epitomizing this style in Andalusia, including Cordoba, Seville and Toledo (optional)
COURSE CONTENTS
Introduction to Art History and architectural terminology. Guidelines for analyzing and commenting on a work of architecture.
Historical context of Mudéjar art:
The successive Christian advances towards the southern Iberian Peninsula and the disappearance of Al-Andalus.
The resulting uprise of different Mudéjar artistic focal areas.
Process of formation of this genuine style and its later evolution.
General features.
Different variants:
- The courtly Mudéjar.
- The popular Mudéjar.
Main regional focal areas in Mudéjar art:
- Castile-León
- Toledo
- Aragon
- Andalusia
GUIDED TOURS
Toledo: The Cristo de la Luz Mosque, the Synagogues of Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito, the Santo Tomé Church...
Seville: San Isidoro del Campo and the Casa de Pilatos.
Cordoba: Royal Chapel, San Bartolomé Chapel and the Casa Mudéjar (Casa Árabe’s headquarters)
These contents and the guided tours related with them will be held across 14 weeks, from September 2021 to February 2022.
