The exhibition, result from a participatory citizen art project designed by Álvaro Abajez, analyzes questions involving identity, representation and collective imaginary in relation with the history of Arab communities in Spain.

“Crossing Glances: Scriptures in doubt” is the exhibition which arose from this process for art and participation in the Third Art Research and Education Residency program run by the UNED, in which theoretical researchers, artists, sociocultural collectives and residents of Madrid and Barcelona meet, reflect and dialogue about their shared heritage in order to create new representations for a more inclusive collective imaginary.

The process, based on a reflection about Orientalist imaginaries, uses representations of the Arab-Muslim communities that make up the Iberian artistic and cultural legacy as a vehicle, thereby attempting to delve into the origin and configuration of the stereotypes that refer and relate to these communities in the local and global context.

Using the visual and literary creations analyzed by the group ”Antes del orientalismo: las ‘imágenes’ del musulmán en la Península Ibérica y sus conexiones mediterráneas” (“Before Orientalism: The ‘images’ of Muslims on the Iberian Peninsula and Their Mediterranean Connections”), artists Soraya Yasmín Rosales and David Pascual Huertas guided two collective art practices through which the participants turned their reflections into forms of artistic expression.

This exhibition shows how the process worked, as well as the works resulting from it,  creating a contemporary experience on memory and the intercultural identity of territory, establishing future horizons for a transcultural collective imaginary.

A project by Álvaro Albajez.
