Democratic Prospects in Syria

On October 31st, Casa Árabe organized in Madrid a speech by Haytham Manna, president of the Syrian National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change abroad.
Mr. Manna sets out the need of searching new non-violent ways to solve the current situation Syria is undergoing.
The event took place at Casa Árabe’s Auditorium (c/ Alcalá, 62), at 19.30. Free entrance subjected to space availability.
He was born in Omalmayaden (south of Syria) in 1951 into the family Aloudat. Haytham Manna studied Medicine at the University of Damascus and at the Mary&Pierre Curie in France. Resides, he is an expert on Psychosomatic Treatment by the University Paris 13 and on Sleep Disorders by the University of Montpellier (France). He shifted into the Social Sciences area and holds a PhD. in Anthropology by the Social Sciences Institute of Paris.
He has been linked for three decades to different Human Rights organizations in his home country – such as Syrian League for Human Rights, Committees for The Defense of Democratic Freedoms and Human Rights in Syria, International Federation for Human Rights, or Arab Commission for Human Rights. He has been in charge of different important charges within them. Therefore, for the tasks he has undertaken all through his career, he has been awarded several prizes, as the one by Human Rights Watch in 1992, or the Human Rights medal of the National Academy of Sciences of Washington (1996).
He has written several pieces of work on Human Rights in its different sides: championing for the woman, rights of the child, torture and violence, protection of journalists and so on. He has published, among others, the following titles: Islam and women rights (Cairo, 2001); Islam and International Humanitarian Law (Amman, 2002); US and Human Rights (Paris and Damascus, 2003); The Future of Human Rights, Impunity and International Law (2005); Protection of journalists (2005); Rights of Child (2005) and Human Rights and Humanitarian Action in the Arab World (2006).
