On Tuesday, April 6, we will be giving a dramatized conference and short workshop to learn about life in Egypt, Sudan and Iraq and the process of making art, with actor, director, playwright and producer Marco Magoa.

For four months in 2020, dealing with the pandemic, artist Marco Magoa directed and presented his latest play, The Death of Zeus, at the Friendship Hall Theater in Khartoum, Sudan and at the Iraqi National Theater in Baghdad. These performances were the outcome of two Performing Arts workshops for young Sudanese and Iraqi actors, technicians and artists.

This performative conference will guide us through the artistic process and life in Sudan and Iraq, including the short workshop he gave in Cairo before returning to Spain. The event will include images and videos, as well as the reading of some excerpts from the performance of The Death of Zeus by Spanish actors Maria Elaidi and Ed Marques of Moroccan and Angolan origins, all with live accompaniment by Sudanese musician Wafir S. Gibril.

The theatrical project The Death of Zeus, which deals with the topic of rape used as a weapon of war and the rise of xenophobic movements in Europe, was given support by the Spanish Embassies in Sudan, Iraq and Egypt, AECID’s ACERCA Program, the Cervantes Institute, the Municipal Government of Gijón and Casa Árabe.

Marco Magoa is an actor, director, playwright and theatrical producer who speaks Arabic and English, allowing him to direct more than twenty-four theatrical projects in countries on four continents over the last fourteen years. His work has been the subject of publications and theses at universities in Italy, France, Greece, Portugal, Spain and the United States.

This activity will be held in person with a very limited audience. Tickets will be available soon on this website. You can also watch the event live online through Casa Árabe’s channels on YouTube and Facebook Live.

Mask use is required throughout the entire event. Thank you for your patience!
