Eastern Cities, by André Elbaz

From September 17, 2013 until November 10, 2013

With the cooperation of the French Institute of Madrid, we are presenting this showing of the colorist imagery of the cities which Moroccan artist André Elbaz painted from 1983 to 1990.

Educated in Rabat and Paris in the 1950’s, Elbaz produced a significant number of works throughout his life. For this exhibition, we have selected about twenty of his most notable paintings.

Eastern cities have represented a break for André Elbaz to breathe in fresh air between times of confrontation and searching. In this stage of his work, the artist has for a time set aside his work as a war artist, in which light was placed in constant confrontation with shadows, and has opened up the windows of his memory. André Elbaz offers us a multi-faceted, colorist imagery of his cities.

This exhibition forms part of a collective project for cooperation with the French Institute of Madrid that will include a simultaneous exhibition of the Moroccan painter at the Museo ABC in Madrid: “Destruction or Work: Urns and Lacerations,” in which you can become more familiar with his most conceptual and recent work. And the artist will be taking part in Segovia’s Hay Festival with the exhibition “The Three Quixotes” and a conference about “On Urns and Lacerations.”

The exhibition can be viewed from September 25 through November 10 at the Casa Árabe exhibition hall (at Calle Alcalá, 62), from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 7:30 p.m.; Sunday and holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Free entrance.
