The future of tourism in Arab countries is the focus of this Special Issue, the Arabic version of which is now available. It includes a summary of the day of events organized at FITUR on this topic, in addition to an interview and an article analyzing the situation in the industry and the strategies to be introduced for the recovery and development of tourism.
The thirty-fourth issue of the Casa Árabe Economics and Business Bulletin contains the special on Casa Árabe at FITUR, with the most notable points of the debate Alternatives and strategies for reactivating tourism in the Middle East and North Africa region, organized by Casa Árabe with the cooperation of the U.N. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This event, which took place on January 31 at the IFEMA fairgrounds, included attendance by senior officials from the Arab tourism sector, including notable persons such as the Libyan Tourism Minister, Ikram Bash Imam, as well as Spanish business representatives from multinationals in this industry.
The special issue includes an interview with Luis Zoreda, Executive Vice-President of Exceltur, who moderated one of these debates which included professionals from Spain’s tourism industry. In this interview, he explains some of the ideas outlined in the debates about how to reactivate the Arab tourism industry and the potential for business cooperation with Spanish companies in the industry. It also includes the article Intra-regional Tourism: Key for Arab Countries and Spain, written by Ana González Santamaría, in which she provides the results of the tourism industry in Arab countries in 2012 and discusses the importance of cooperation between Spain and the Arab countries as a medium to long-term strategy.
The Bulletin contains a wide range of information on the High-level Meeting between Spain and Algeria that took place in January and provided even more momentum for their bilateral relations, as well as news on the latest contracts signed by Spanish companies in Arab countries, the economic developments in the region, by countries and sectors, and summaries of the latest reports published on the region.
