Elizabeth Ayoub in Concert

In Madrid and Cordoba, Casa Árabe is presenting "Oceans and Moons: Elizabeth Ayoub in Concert." This artist of Lebanese origin will also be giving a workshop on "The Art of the Maqam and Arab Rhythms." June 10, 11 and 12.
In her performances, Ayoub will be interpreting material from both her album “Oceans and Moons” and others of her most recent works. Ayoub’s work is a fusion of traditional Arab music and Latin rhythms, including touches of flamenco along the way. The daughter of Lebanese parents, but brought up in Venezuela and a resident of the United States, this singer has been influenced by Arab artists such as Fairuz and Mohammad Abdel Wahab, but also by jazz figures including Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, along with contemporary musicians like Barbara Streisand and Simon & Garfunkel. In her second album, which she recorded by traveling to both Madrid and Beirut, she worked with Javier Limón (the Spanish Grammy-winning producer of the album “Lágrimas negras” by El Cigala and Bebo Valdés). Ayoub sings in Spanish, Arabic, French and English and lives between New York, Beirut and Miami.

An interactive session between musicians and the audience, where you can learn about a few examples of Arab maqamat. The maqam, which means “range” in Arabic, is the system of melodic modes used in traditional Arab music. As part of the event, the group will learn to sing a song and try out some vocal improvisation.
